Magic's Pawn is the first book in The Last Herald Mage trilogy by Mercedes Lackey, and it's one of the books that made me fall in love with Fantasy in general. But the fantasy genre has been more open to homosexuality in books that probably any other, and it was there that I read my first book ever with a gay character, Mercedes Lackey's The Last Herald Mage Trilogy (Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise, Magic's Price). I admit up front, I am a big Mercedes Lackey fan, ever since I read Magic's Pawn (The Last Herald-Mage Series, Book 1) . I'd love to see more fantasy books with races of people where gender sexuality was not so much of an issue. "This first book of the Last Herald Mage Trilogy was first brought to my attention by my on-line friend Pat Nelson Childs who says Lackey's work was influential in his gay-themed fantasy series The Chronicles of Firma.
